Lletty Brongu was built as part of Churchill's plans to defend Wales from the Nazis, with construction getting underway in early 1940. Welsh miners help to build underground hangars to accommodate the Spitfires that first flew there in 1941 and aviation archaeologists were surprised to find a complete Spitfire when they broke into an old hangar in 1971. After the war it reverted to farmland until the then Ogrw Borough Council re-opened it in 1981. |
